ONE of Britain’s top cardiologists warns today that the “appalling” state of the NHS could lead to more scandals like the one at Mid Staffordshire Hospital.

Professor Jane Somerville, who established the first adolescent cardiology ward at the National Heart Hospital in London in 1995, tells this morning’s Desert Island Discs (Radio 4, 11.15am) that “interfering” managers wrecked the health service she once loved.

Now 80 and retired, she adds: “I think this erratic care…I think Staffordshire is not alone.”
